Escape the greyscale skies and transform your home into a tropical paradise
Dreaming away the winter on an island in the sun? Dream on. But it feels particularly important at this time of year to create a home space that provides some escapism from the grey outside world. Luckily this season’s tropical trend gives us a little of both.
Fruity, tropical prints were all over the SS14 runways, and it hasn’t taken long for the trend to be picked up by interior designers – everything from palm leaves and pineapples to exotic flowers and parrots have been spotted in high street stores. Bright florals, breeze-beaten wood, bold fruity glassware, fantastical ceramics, natural stone, and tropical birds digitally printed on lush fabrics are just a few of the best mood-lifting pieces. The overall aesthetic is vibrant and oversized, edgy and electric.
Colour palettes look to coral, terracotta, emeralds, vibrant yellow and orange, set against beiges, light blue and grey. Rainforest-esque, mossy greens are lifted with bold brights and juxtaposed with wood, coloured glass, perspex, and steel. Blank walls can be brought to life with full oversized leaf prints for a dramatic update.
If you shy away from bright, statement styles, don’t fret; the tropical look can be embraced as part of a relaxed, low-key vibe by choosing airy pastels, subdued palm prints and natural materials like rattan and bamboo furniture.
Springtime feels a long time away, so we’ve put together a few pieces that will help restore you when you step through your front door. Pour yourself some coconut water and snuggle back on your palm-print cushions. Bliss!
