PHOENIX selects 5 of the best bomber jackets for spring
First introduced in 1917 for the US army, the bomber jacket originally provided both movement and warmth for pilots flying in open cockpits. Since then it has achieved iconic status, trending at regular intervals throughout history and worn by everyone from James Dean to Pink Ladies and Barak Obama to Jay Z. But for 2014 the casual cool of the bomber is looking luxe.
For SS14 designers went to town on the bomber’s blank canvas, with Stella McCartney, 3.1 Philip Lim and Jonathan Saunders all transforming this iconic jacket into a work of art. Quirky floral embellishment and printed jacquard are the ideal way to jazz up a pair of boyfriend jeans for the daytime, but for full impact in the evening throw a vibrant silk bomber over black tailored trousers and a slinky top and finish with stilettos and a statement necklace.
