It’s a well known fact: fashion has transformative powers. Designers regularly elevate the mundane to new heights and for Spring 2015, it was denim at the heart of the Cinderella story.
Denim may be the everyman of fabrics, but its also something we have very strong feelings about. The perfect pair of jeans can take years to find, the issue of double denim can divide the most harmonious friends, and many would still contest its status as workwear. What we all can agree on is its enduring popularity, so its no wonder that brands hoping to combine creativity with a very big buck stake their claim on our humble staple now and then.
Incorporating a fresh piece of denim is the easiest way to update your wardrobe this season, and it will go with everything you already have. Here’s your SS15 menu:
The A-Line Skirt: Those of us who spent most of the early noughties in barely-there denim minis might shy away from this piece – but we promise, an A-Line version has a surprising amount of grown up chic. Go for an ample length (below the knee at least) with a 1970s shape, then team with a polo-neck t-shirt or varsity knit and pool slides for cool-girl urban appeal.
The Boyfriend Fit: Ripped at the knee in a vintage wash, boyfriend jeans really are your new most-flattering go-to. For those purists who find it hard to move from a skinny leg, try a size smaller than your usual – it will only take a few outings for you to fall in love. Wear with structured, clean-lined tops and strappy sandals.
The New Denim Jacket: It was Burberry who caught our eye at the SS15 shows, with their patchworked, feathered, copped and peplum denim jackets. Expect a wave of pretenders on high street rails, and add a pencil skirt and sneakers for a sporty edge.
The Dungaree Dress: Dungarees and denim dresses have been popular trans-seasonal fare, but it’s their lovechild that is captivating us now. Worn over a shirt with espadrilles, it’s a playful twist on tailoring for Spring.
