On the last day of London Fashion Week when the throngs of shows and exhibitions begin to blend into one, it can be difficult to digest another with a fresh mind. However, Nova Chiu managed to draw us out of our fashion induced coma with their magical ‘Bon Voyage’ collection.
The audience fell silent as the show opened with a homemade video projected onto the back of the catwalk. Captured from the front seat of their car by design duo Nova and Jeff, the journey depicted the road trips the couple have taken since their debut as part of Vauxhall Fashion Scouts One to Watch last year. Inspired by the versatile landscapes they encountered on their travels, Nova’s SS13 collection tells a story through manipulated scenic photographs printed onto silk, satin, cotton and spandex.
Fabrics were adorned with mountain ranges, haunting forests and running streams, appearing in a plethora of colours from sunset oranges and sky blues to mystical green and purple hues. Although it’s clear that the pair wanted to concentrate on creating a more commercial, wearable collection this year, there were still strong design elements in each piece – maxi dresses detailed aqua fringing on the hems, colourful hand rusched nets lay over printed coats, and floating fabric tunics were transformed with origami style folds and skilful draping. Hair was styled up by the Toni & Guy team to look simple yet messy, reflecting the bohemian feel, whilst chunky gemstone jewellery by Marina Prokopiva provided extra glamour.
With each piece taking you on a different journey, we certainly expect to see more of Nova Chiu’s offerings for SS13 being worn out in the world, where they belong.
