Are you ready for the return of blue makeup? No, nor are we – but let’s give it the benefit of the doubt

Every season, emerging from a crowd of user-friendly trends, there is always one beauty look which catches us off-guard. For SS14, the unexpected triumph was a hue which may conjure cringeworthy memories of beauty disasters for anyone born before the noughties. But don’t roll your eyes just yet, as this trend has come a long way since Cameron did this:

Yes we know, try to bare with us…

Big names on the show schedule brought blue hues back with a bang for SS14. Zoe Jordan eased us in with a barely-there hint of metallic turquoise on the inner eye, whilst Miu Miu and Badgley Mishcka offered the prettiest pastel washes of powder blue across the lids. Marc Jacobs turned the trend on its head with a bold swipe of electric blue along the lower lashes. Finally, at Prada we (unsurprisingly) found one best left on the catwalks, where Pat McGrath took a spray gun to model’s lids, loaded with an opaque peacock blue.

Away from the runways, this is one trend to approach with caution. Don’t go digging around for your long-lost sapphire eyeshadow palette, as modernity is achieved through minimalism. We’re sticking to our tried-and-tested winged eyeliner, a la David Koma, for an easy hint at the trend. Stila’s Stay All Day Liner Pen is easily precise to use and really does stay all day. Keep the rest of your look seriously minimal with a simple swipe of mascara.
